Immersive Solo Show - The Promontory (2019)

“IT’S A RIOT, PULL UP!” is an installation exploring civil disobedience, propaganda, and the tipping point that turns political unrest into riots. Using mass media style, the political street art takes on form as event posters. The subject matter brings to question why do glimpses of women get used in commercial communication so often? What is the story of these women? Who were the women that sparked or contributed to these controversial events? What was the cost? What is the role of The Woman in community engagement, civil disobedience, and organizing? How often is her story told? Muddling identity by becoming the women central to these incidents, I use my image to bring reflection, commentary, and the story of these women to life.
This collaborative art was displayed in the middle of BODY Sundays, a weekly interactive Afro-Caribbean dance party. The modular space was used to create an immersive viewing chamber. Stepping behind the curtains brought viewers into an urban setting. Wireless headphones with a curated playlist for the show were available for listening in the viewing booth.
