The Sick Muse Magazine (2019)
ART & DESIGN | COPY
The Sick Muse is a Chicago-based underground magazine presenting subversive thoughts on music and art. The independent publication held a poster contest. The submissions explored the theme of mass media (how do ideas propagate? How does art and knowledge move so that they can move us? How does power play into this? How does form play into this?).
“BAG$ NOT BINKIES,” the winning entry, usurps the aesthetic of commercial media, while critiquing the use of anonymous women in communications and advertisements. The social commentary addresses the wage gap that women, particularly Black women, still face despite a rise in visibility in the media and advertisement. The copy, taken from one of my tweets, is laid out subtly on an image from the “INNA ONE LIKKLE MARINA” collection.
